    Dear BPW Colleagues,

President-Barb Tremlett Appreciation.

Appreciation is key to a happy life. When we are appreciating, we are at a higher level of our true self. Positive thought can take us to happy places and good feelings instantly. We face many challenges and decisions every day, and many times we get a sick feeling from knowing we have those choices to make.

The next time you have a difficult situation with a loved one or a co-worker, spend five minutes in appreciation of them. Write down all the good you see in them, the nice things they have done, and the positive aspects you see in them, and then you will find that your mood will change with them.

Use this technique any time you feel frustrated or rushed. It will make a world of difference in the way people look at you, the way you react to any given situation, and in your own self confidence.

As professional business women, we have a self image of what we stand for. This technique can help you in the board room, with subordinates, and with family. Use it often and with passion. You will be amazed at the success it will bring to you.

Sincerely,
Barb Tremlett
President

    Exciting Speaker Line-up for 2007

Mark your calendars now! The Program Committee has lined up two more fabulous events for the spring.

May 17, 2007 - Sharon Hill-Filteau, Nashua Fire/Rescue, Suzanne Barricklow, 2nd Leutenant NH National Guard, and a woman from the Nashua Police Department, honor Mother's Day Month with: "Women/Mothers Putting Their Lives On The Line At Work."
June 2007 - TBD.

    State Stats

As a follow-up to last month's Equal Pay Day meeting, Tammy Leocata, Immediate Past President of BPW NH, submitted the following article that recently appeared in NH Magazine.

Although women's representation among full-time workers in the state has increased from 27 percent, increases in women's earnings, business ownership and decision-making responsibility have lagged behind their increased participation in the labor force and their advances in education.

Full-time working women aged 23-30, with four-year college degrees, earned 68 percent of what their male counterparts earned on average. Among 31 to 44-year- old full-time working college graduates, females earned 65 percent of the average male.

Women with children of any age, and particularly women with children under 6, tended to replace full- time employment with part-time or exit the labor force. Although more than 71 percent of women without children were employed full-time in 1999, full-time employment for women with young children dropped to about 50 percent.

When women did return to the full-time labor force, the data show that they suffered an economic penalty for taking the lead role in family care.

Nationally, the average for women-owned business is 26 percent. New Hampshire is 44th on the list, with only 23.6 percent of women-owned businesses.

News from the Programs Committee-May 2007

In honor of Mother's Day month, the Greater Nashua BPW is excited to present "Women/Mothers Putting Their Lives on the Line at Work" at our May luncheon.

Three women, all in non-traditional roles, will educate and inform us about the opportunities that exist for women, the barriers they have had to overcome, and what keeps them motivated in order to serve us while putting their lives on the line each and every day.

Join Traci Dunne, Hollis Police Department, Sharron Hill-Filteau, Nashua Fire/Rescue, and Suzanne Barricklow, 2nd Lieutenant NH National Guard, on May 17th for another inspirational learning opportunity.

Earlier in the year, we had the pleasure of listening to the following presenters...

  • September - Jennifer Horn of 1590 WSMN spoke on "A Purpose Driven Life: Let's Get Real."
  • October - Linda Cataldo spoke on "Buying and Selling on e-Bay, Expand Your Business to the Worldwide Marketplace." Pam Richardson of In Hot Water sponsored this meeting.
  • November - Claudie Mahar, recipient of the 2005 Nashua Citizen of the Year Award, discussed her work and involvement at the hospital and in the community. Nashua Pastoral Care sponsored this meeting.
  • January - Sharron McCarthy, VP and Publisher of NH Magazine, shared with us the experiences she went through professionally and personally to get to where she is today. She also shared ideas of how to set yourself apart from the competition in regards to marketing your business and skills.
  • February - Susan Granfors, Chef/Owner of House on the Hill, spoke on "Growing Your Home- Based Business." Once again, Pam Richardson of In Hot Water sponsored this meeting.
  • March - Amy Black, Marketing Communications Manager of Constant Contact, spoke on "Benefits of an Online Newsletter." Kerry Willard Bray of KWB Designs sponsored this meeting.
  • April - Stefany A. Shaheen, Consultant to The Center for Public Leadership at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, celebrated Equal Pay Day by speaking on: "Equity Issues in the Workplace."

We look forward to seeing you - and your guest! - at our meeting on Thursday, May 17th, from 11:15 am - 1:00 pm, at the Crowne Plaza in Nashua.

Sincerely,
Pam Richardson
