Dear BPW Colleagues, |
| |
It’s a brand new year and a great time to sit back and
appreciate the wonderful things in our lives.
We live in a world of dynamic change. Technology is speeding us
to heights we never imagined 20 years ago. We are living in a
country that offers more freedoms than most. We have
opportunities around us to make changes in our daily lives. We
can be anything we want to be.
I have realized one of the keys in life is to know what we want,
to go after it, and to achieve it. One of the opportunities I
would like to share with you is the opportunity to network with
a great group of women. This month, we will be adding a little
networking fun to our monthly program. Learn about the work that
others are doing for business or fun in our organization and
share with others what you do.
Let’s have a great meeting and kick start the year in style. I
hope that 2007 will be a prosperous, healthy, and entertaining
year for you and your loved ones!
Sincerely,
Barb

Having Fun is Hard Work! |
| |

“We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old
because we stop playing.” —George Bernard Shaw
If you had an extra two hours in your day, what would you do with
it?
A. Do a chore around the house
B. Do something for work (i.e., check email, finish a report,
etc.)
C. Do some other kind of task
D. Play
Most of us would pick A, B, or C. Why?
Part of the problem is that we’re brought up to believe that being
productive is more important than having fun.
When we were children, we had to do our chores before we were
allowed to go out and play; we had to finish our homework before
we could talk on the phone; etc. Work always preceded fun. And,
when there wasn’t enough time to do both, work took precedence
over fun.
For most of us, the pattern continued into adulthood. We eat lunch
at our desks so we can keep working; we make sure everyone is fed,
the dishes are done, and everyone is taken care of before we
retire; etc. By the time we actually have some time to play, we’re
too tired to do anything about it. Again, we give productivity the
upper hand.
The other issue is that many of us don’t know how to have fun.
Most of us believe that having fun should come naturally; it
shouldn’t be something we have to work at. That may have been true
when we were in grade school, but most of us stopped playing
regularly around the same time we stopped having recess. As our
priorities shifted from play to work, so, too, did our ability to
play. Now, what comes naturally is work.
So, how do you shift your priorities back from work to play—or at
least give play some more “play time?” Oddly enough, you work at
it.
First, you figure out what’s fun for you. This may be more
difficult than it sounds, so you may have to experiment. Take an
art class. Join a club. Play BINGO. And if you don’t like what you
sign up for, try something else. Just get yourself playing!
Next, you treat having fun as a task, something you have to do,
until it becomes natural again. Actually put “play dates” into
your calendar. If you enjoy the outdoors, block off two or three
hours a week to go for a walk. If spending time with friends is
your thing, set up a monthly “Girl’s or Guy’s Night Out.” The key
is making fun a “recurring appointment.” The less you have to
think about it, and the more regularly you do it, the quicker it
will become habit.
Now, go out and have some fun!

News from the Programs Committee—January 2007 |
| |

Many thanks to the members who signed-up to attend our
networking Office Party at the Crowne Plaza. Although many of us
were looking forward to a relaxing time to get to know each
other better and share some good food and drink, unfortunately
we did not sell enough tickets to have the event.
I want to especially thank all the people who went ahead anyway
and got a gift for the children from Nashua Pastoral Care. Pam
Richardson and I finished off the list of any toy or piece of
clothing that wasn’t purchased and then drove a van full of gifts,
including a bike with training wheels, to Nashua Pastoral Care in
time for them to deliver to the families. It was wonderful to have
our organization give back to the community again this year.
I would like to challenge everyone to bring one, just one,
guest to our meetings. That would double the number of people
everyone would get to meet and network with at the meeting and in
the future and would help our organization grow. So look at your
contacts and address book and invite someone now to our January
18th meeting!
We had a great start to our program year hearing from Jennifer
Horn of 1590 WSMN speaking on “A Purpose Driven Life: Let’s
Get Real.” Jennifer’s message “hit home” for many of us and
encouraged us to reflect on what we do and what is truly
important. We hope you will continue to follow Jennifer through
her radio talk show and her web site at
JenniferHornOnli ne.com.
In October we heard Linda Cataldo explain in great detail
“how-to’s” of e-Bay and ways we can use it personally and for our
businesses. Speaking on “Buying and Selling on e-Bay, Expand
Your Business to the Worldwide Marketplace”. Linda’s talk
helped us know how to better utilize e-Bay and what things to
watch out for when accessing this service.
The October meeting was sponsored by Pam Richardson of
In Hot Water. We thank Pam for her sponsorship and
contribution to the Nashua organization and look forward to
utilizing her services and products from her business in the near
future.
On November 16th, we heard from Claudie Mahar, recipient of
the Nashua Citizen of the Year Award in 2005. She will discuss
“Relationships – Making A Difference In The Community.” The
sponsor of this meeting was Nashua Pastoral Care.
We look forward to seeing you—and your guest!—at our meeting on
Thursday, January 18th, from 11:15 am – 1:00 pm, at the Crowne
Plaza in Nashua.
Sincerely,
Susan Cooke
